When Barnes & Noble introduced their Nook eBook reader late last year, library customers who use OverDrive wondered if the new device would be compatible with that company’s DRM-protected Adobe EPUB and PDF eBooks. Fairfax County Public Library staff contacted OverDrive and were told that the digital media provider was in the process of testing the device. Last week OverDrive added the Nook to its list of compatible devices. OverDrive does say that “the display of Adobe eBooks on the Barnes & Noble nook may vary, depending on the nature of the content." The other portable media device compatible with OverDrive eBooks is the Sony Reader Model PRS 505 and newer. The proprietary file format used in the Amazon Kindle prevents it from being compatible with OverDrive.
